Girlfriends eating healthy food on a terrace

When we experience stress, food is almost the first thing we reach for. Not a bad idea, but if you’re going to eat, it should be food that really helps you de-stress!

Eating in itself has a stress-relieving effect in general, which is why the concept of stress eating exists, because we find comfort in food. This is not a bad thing at all, as long as we are mindful of what we put on our plates, not just to gain weight, but also to eat food that is effective in calming our nerves when we are stressed. Like these five foods that are not only stress relieving but also healthy.

When we’re stressed, we reach for the snacks and go for crisps, chocolate, anything that makes us feel like we’re producing a momentary bliss hormone. It’s a much healthier choice to go for nuts at this time of year, as oilseeds such as almonds, walnuts and pistachios are high in B vitamins, which play a crucial role in reducing stress.

Stress-relieving foods are not just snacks. Good news, because sometimes we need a hearty fatty snack to feel good. When this happens, we turn to simpler options like quick meals or fatty dishes that don’t take much time to prepare. Instead, choose seafood, which is a much better stress reliever because you don’t have to deal with stomach aches or heartburn later, like after a big burger. Salmon is a fat-rich fish and doesn’t need a lot of frying time to eat, but you can also choose other fish. Herring, tuna or sardines are also good for stress relief. They are all rich in omega-3 fats, which help to fight bad moods.

Not only do they make us feel good to look at, but they also taste so good that we can’t complain. Berries make up for our cravings for sweets, and they also help to regulate our blood pressure. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and others are all healthy and delicious stress relievers, and they save us from just munching on cake.

Leafy greens

Green leafy vegetables such as broccoli, kale, spinach and lettuce are some of the best stress relievers that you can reach for anytime you’re in a bad mood. That’s because green vegetables are rich in vitamin C, which helps regulate blood sugar levels, which in turn can lead to the control of anxiety, depression and stress.

Milk and yoghurt

They’re both great for calming you down, and there’s a reason why children used to be given warm, honeyed milk before bedtime to help them relax and fall asleep faster. Drinking milk in the evening before bedtime is not the best idea, but having a glass of milk with dinner or a natural yoghurt can be a good idea for stress relief. As both are rich in vitamin C, they can help stop stressful thoughts racing around in your head.
